MVP Fab 5 Football Rankings Week 2
Which was bigger news opening weekend?
Option 1: The GWOC Central went 1-5.
Option 2: Coldwater, St. Henry, Marion Local and Delphos St. John’s went 0-4?
It wasn’t the start the Miami Valley was expecting for a season that offered so much promise. The good news? It happened in Week 1. There are nine more games.
That being said, here’s how this week’s MVP Fab 5 polls shake out…
Division I
1. Troy (1-0)
The Trojans shut out a solid Chaminade Julienne team 30-0 and held the Eagles to just 53 yards rushing. They had four TOs as well. Now things get ratcheted up ten-fold with a visit from Middletown (1-0) looming.

2. Wayne (0-1)
A failed 2-point conversion attempt (or was it?) sealed the Warriors fate in a 32-31 loss to Middletown. In didn’t help that Wayne was 1-of-5 in PATs for the game. This week a long bus trip to Canton McKinley awaits. The Bulldogs are coming off a 28-24 loss to Youngstown Mooney.

3. Centerville (0-1)
Not the start head coach Ron Ullery and the Elks wanted. Centerville turned the ball over five times in the second half of a 33-14 loss to visiting Cincinnati Elder. Turn the page. The Elks face Indianapolis Cathedral (0-2) in the Herbstreit Classic Monday at Ohio Stadium. The game is at 3 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.

4. Northmont (0-1)
Sure the T-Bolts 28-14 loss to Hamilton is shocking but when you consider Northmont was missing two starting DL and senior LB Kaleb Ringer (Michigan recruit) you can start to understand why. What’s unsettling though is the fact the T-Bolt offense only generated 14 points. It doesn’t get any easier this week at Princeton (1-0).

5. Springboro (0-1)
The Panthers offense was impressive, but their defense faltered in a 38-28 loss to visiting Mason. Senior RB Jalen Campbell ran for 213 yards and two TDs, but the Boro D gave up 240 yards and four TDs to Mason RB Daryl Johnson. This week the Panthers travel to Sycamore (1-0), which ran for 345 yards last week in a win over Withrow. Uh-oh.

Division II
1. Trotwood-Madison (1-0)
The Rams broke in their new stadium turf by taking down Thurgood Marshall 35-21 in the team’s first football meeting ever. To say it was heated is an understatement. Next up is another City League test – Dunbar (1-0).

2. Piqua (1-0)
Senior RB Jon Dembski rambled for 222 yards and three TDs as the Indians opened with a convincing 29-7 victory over Lima Senior. Now they hit the road where they’ll be a favorite at host Fairfield (0-1).

3. Tecumseh (1-0)
The Arrows won a shootout at D-I sleeper Fairborn 45-32. RB Derek Riffell was the big gun, rushing for 214 yards and three TDs (two in the fourth quarter) on 29 carries. Now Tecumseh gets another huge test with another road game at D-II No. 5 Butler.

4. Tippecanoe (1-0)
The Red Devils limited Graham to 152 total yards in a 34-13 win. Sophomore FB Jacob Hall was Tipp’s leading rusher (124 yards and a TD), while junior RB Nick Fischer scored two TDs. Next up is a test from visiting Greenville (0-1).

5. Butler
The Aviators move into the Fab 5 after an impressive 39-13 road win at Greenville. Behind its massive OL, Butler generated 444 total yards, including 365 on the ground. Senior RB Tyler Jones was the main cog, churning out 288 yards and four TDs on 14 carries. Jones averaged an amazing 20.6 yards per carry. Butler gets D-II No. 3 Tecumseh (1-0) this week in their home opener.

Division III
1. Alter (1-0)
Led by an impressive performance from junior QB Malik Zaire, the Knights beat their neighborhood rival Fairmont for the seventh straight season 38-6. Zaire ran for 132 yards and two TDs and threw for 87 and another TD. This week visiting Cleveland East Tech (1-0) is on the docket.

2. Springfield Shawnee (1-0)
It was a little tougher than most thought it would be but the Braves survived host Springfield Catholic 20-14.Wearing a Superman t-shirt under his pads – literally – senior QB Brad Jarzab threw for two TDs and ran for another as Shawnee scored 14 fourth quarter points to rally. Now the Braves travel to upstart West Carrollton (1-0).

3. Eaton (1-0)
The Eagles outgained visiting Oxford Talawanda 352-26 in total yards en route to a decisive 51-14 win. Senior QB Cole French threw for 237 yards and two TDs, senior RB Nathan Clark ran for 117 yards and three TDs and senior WR Joey McCafferty returned a punt for a TD, in addition to having over 100 yards receiving. Eaton gets a real test in visiting D-VI No. 3 St. Henry this week. Wow. What a game.

4. Dunbar (1-0)
We knew the Wolverines were going to be good and they proved it to Valley View, handing the host Spartans a 28-24 setback. Now things get amped up with a visit from D-II No. 1 Trotwood-Madison (1-0) looming.

5. Ben Logan (1-0)
The Raiders were impressive in routing Riverside 57-13. Led by junior QB Trent Rodenberger (ran for three TDs and threw for another), BL racked up 631 total yards. The Raiders ran for 470. Now they step it up a little with a visit from West Liberty-Salem (1-0).

Division IV
1. Fenwick (1-0)
The Falcons ran over visiting Oakwood 53-12. Senior QB Austin Gearing (Miami, Oh) ran for 183 yards and three TDs on 10 carries and completed 4-of-7 passes for 81 yards. Fenwick is at Oxford Talawanda (0-1) this week.

2. Waynesville (1-0)
So how good are the Spartans? We will find out this week with a visit from rival and D-IV No. 3 Clinton-Massie (1-0). As for the first test? The Spartans passed that with flying colors, dismantling highly-regarded host East Clinton 41-7. Despite tossing a first quarter interception that was returned for the Astros only score, senior QB Luke Creditt completed 8-of-12 passes for 132 yards and a TD and ran for 128 yards and another TD on 15 carries.

3. Clinton-Massie (1-0)
The Falcons won their 33rd straight regular season game and recorded their fourth straight shutout in the “Cider Keg” series with a 34-0 win over Blanchester. Massie held Blanchester to 18 yards in the second half and recorded three turnovers. This week the Falcons head down State Route 73 to take on host Waynesville (1-0).

4. Chaminade Julienne (0-1)
The Eagles got shut out in their opener and lost 30-0. Yet they remain No. 4? That defeat came at the hands of Troy. How many D-IV teams in these rankings could hang with the Trojans? Answer: None. This week CJ faces another stiff test in visiting Thurgood Marshall (0-1).

5. Milton-Union (1-0)
Despite turning the ball over five times, The Bulldogs beat a solid Miami East squad 21-14. Now they hit the road again for a game at Oakwood (0-1).

Division V
1. Coldwater (0-1)
The Cavaliers dropped their opener but don’t drop in these rankings. We still think their the best D-V team in the Miami Valley. Their loss, a 24-17 setback, came against visiting Kenton who is ranked No. 1 in the state in the D-IV Muscle Milk and JJHuddle Power Poll. Lets see if Coldwater losses another one this year. As for this week, the Cavs hit the road for a lengthy bus trip to Hicksville (0-1).

2. LCC (1-0)
The Thunderbirds outlasted Delphos St. John’s 21-14 to pick up their first win in the series since 2007. Michigan State recruit and LCC senior QB Tyler O’Connor finished 11-of-21 for 121 yards and two INTs. He also ran for 41 yards. This week LCC heads to Convoy Crestview (0-1).

3. Anna (1-0)
The Rockets put it to visiting Lehman Catholic 61-14. Now they take a long bus trip and a shot at host Sherwood Fairview (0-1).

4. Versailles (1-0)
The Tigers beat a good D-II team in visiting Celina 31-28 on a last second field goal. Now they hit the road as an overwhelming favorite at Graham (0-1), an old Southwest Rivers Conference rival.

5. Covington (1-0)
The Buccs notched a solid road win with an impressive 43-20 decision at New Bremen. Defensively Covington forced four TOs. Senior QB Isaiah Winston led the offense by throwing two TDs and running for another. Cross County Conference action starts in Week 2 with a visit from Mississinawa Valley (0-1).

Division VI
1. Minster (1-0)
The Wildcats beat rival Fort Loramie 26-5. Despite four first half turnovers, Minster outgained the Redskins 367-64 in total yards. The Wildcats are at Lehman Catholic (0-1) this week.

2. Delphos St. John’s (0-1)
The Blue Jays lost 21-14 to Lima Central Catholic but bump up two spots with a solid showing against the T-Birds. The defense held LCC QB and Michigan State recruit Tyler O’Connor to 11-of-21 passing for 121 yards and two INTs. Things don’t get any easier this week with Big School power Detroit (MI) Central Catholic coming to Delphos.

3. St. Henry (0-1)
The Redskins laid an egg against visiting Marion Pleasant, falling behind 34-13 at half before losing 41-34. Junior QB Kyle Stahl threw three TDs and ran for another. This week St. Henry has another huge non-conference clash at high-powered D-III contender Eaton (1-0).

4. Marion Local (0-1)
The Flyers dropped a tough 13-7 decision in OT at Lima Shawnee. Turnovers (three second half interceptions) doomed ML which faces Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary (CA) at home.

5. Springfield Catholic (0-1)
The Irish lost their opener and debut at No. 3? Yep. We think Springfield Shawnee is going to be a very good team. And SCC gave the Braves everything they could handle in a 20-14 loss. Expect the Irish to get in the win column this week at Greenon (0-1).
