Chaminade Julienne sophomore linebacker Darrien Howard does not get as much publicity as some of the other top Ohio class of 2013 prospects, but he is a good one and recruiters definitely know about him.
The 6-foot-2 and 240-pound Howard was Chaminade-Julienne’s starting middle linebacker his freshman year. He started all ten games that season in helping his team finish with an 8-2 record, making 123 tackles.
Howard missed the first three games of his sophomore season with torn meniscus in his right knee. In the final seven games he made 70 tackles with a sack and an interception.
Among the schools already showing interest in Howard are Ohio State, Alabama, Wisconsin, Oregon, Iowa, Nebraska, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Connecticut and the MAC schools.
Howard has a scholarship offer from Cincinnati.
“Coaches from Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State have been in to our school,” Howard said. “I took a visit to Cincinnati over spring break.”
Howard plans to attend the Buckeyes’ three-day camp next month and will probably also attend the Bearcats’ camp. When he makes it up to Columbus it won’t be the first time.
“My dad and I went up to the Ohio State-Miami game,” Howard said. “That was real good. I’ve talked to Luke Fickell and Jim Heacock. They came to my school once and I talked to them at the game.”
When asked to name the schools he is most interested in, Howard said, “I like Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State. Those are my three favorites.”
Bill Kurelic’s Comment: Howard is an outstanding talent. He is going to get Big Ten offers, it is just a matter of time. I would not be surprised at all if the Buckeyes eventually offer.
