Statewide Boys Basketball Preview: Division III

Often times in sports we talk about storybook endings, but rarely do they ever come to fruition. Following the 1998 NFL season, John Elway was able to ride off into the sunset after his Denver Broncos captured its second consecutive Super Bowl trophy.
Last March, Ohio high school basketball was able to capture a little bit of the same magic when Lima Central Catholic’s 32-year coach, Bob Seggerson, nailed down his first D-III state championship. Most were blindsided by what followed.
Seggerson would announce his retirement during the post game press conference ending a magnificent run with the Thunderbirds. Assistant coach Frank Kill is Seggerson’s heir apparent.
What is in store for 2010-2011? There should be plenty of parody amongst the state. Once again, Cincinnati Taft will be a heavy favorite to cut down the nets in late March, but as we saw last season no thing is a sure thing. The Senators were upset by Columbus Bishop Ready in the regional final thanks to 37 points from Tiffin University freshman, Joe Graessle.
Usually, the Northwest part of the state has a “super” team, but this season it doesn’t appear to have anyone with such status. However, there are plenty of very good teams in NW Ohio. Lima Central Catholic, the reigning D-III state champion, is the closest thing to a “super” team in that area.
The Northwest and Southwest both won four state championships from 2000-2010 with the Northeast notching three. Akron SVSM (2000, 2001) and Cincinnati NCH (2005, 2006, 2007) were the only repeat winners in the time frame.
With Cincinnati Taft and Lima Central Catholic being our No. 1 and 2 teams in the preseason it’s likely we will have another winner from the Southwest or Northwest.
Since the OHSAA went to the four division alignment in 1988, neither the East District nor the Southeast has won a D-III state championship. The SW, NW, and NE have dominated while the Central has only a single championship in 1998 (Sparta Highland). That was just some food for thought when making your state championship predictions.
With all that being said, this is the best chance the Southeast has possessed since Wheelersburg in 2007 and Ironton in 2005. Chesapeake, Ironton, and Piketon will start off in our Top 15, while Oak Hill, Wheelersburg, Peebles, and Lucasville Valley should also be good.
The East District will put its hopes with Sugarcreek Garaway and St. Clairsville.
The Central has a legitimate contender in Bloom-Carroll.
At any rate, it will be fun to watch the rest of the field try and chase down Cincinnati Taft which should put some energy into Ohio’s often-times forgotten division.

OHSH on Cincinnati Taft: Cincinnati Taft will be as good as they want to be this season. It’s certainly not now or never with four very good juniors on this team, but there is a chance the Senators may move back to D2 next season.
Taft was far and away the most talented team in D-III last season, but came up short in the regional final against a red-hot Columbus Bishop Ready outfit led by Joe Graessle. Look for Taft to come back even hungrier this season.
Taft will welcome back returning 1st Team All-Ohioan Adolphus “Diesel” Washington and his 24 points per game. Simply put, Washington is the most dominating high school player in Ohio (D-III) and possibly all divisions.
He will be joined by fellow juniors Orlando Berry (9.7 ppg/5.0 apg.), Dwayne Stanford (10.2 ppg.), and Cincinnati North College Hill transfer, Jalean Lowe (6’3). All four are members of the nationally-known All-Ohio Purple AAU squad.
Senior transfers Kadeem Palmer formerly of Cincinnati Woodward and Chris Lowe formerly of Cincinnati North College Hill will be expected to contribute quite a bit as well. Lowe and Jalean Lowe are brothers.
Senior Marquez Johnson should also be a factor along with Cincinnati Aiken transfer, Jermaine Freeman. The latter is also a member of the All-Ohio Purple outfit.
Lima Central Catholic (23-4, State Champions)

OHSH on Lima CC: Lima CC was just (3-4) at one point last season, which is where Bob Seggerson expected his Thunderbirds to be coming off another successful football season.
Following a December 29 loss to Findlay Liberty-Benton, the Thunderbirds would not lose again eventually avenging losses to L-B and Ottawa-Glandorf in district tournament play. LCC is currently riding a 20-game winning streak, which culminated last season with the 2010 D-III state championship.
What an incredible season considering they started the year (0-2) following the Elida Tip Off Classic. LCC will need to replace its 32-year head coach, outstanding point guard Desi Kirkman, and starter Sam Stolly. Losing a top-notch point guard is one of the toughest losses a team can take, and this is no different with Kirkman.
Three starters return in seniors Bubba Krieg (9.0 ppg.) and Jon Steiger (6.0 ppg.) along with talented junior Ty O’Connor (10.5 ppg.).
Senior Austin Stolly (7.3 ppg.) returns after serving as a terrific sixth man last season along with junior Billy Taflinger (5.9 ppg.), senior Derek Allen, and junior John Kidd. Furthermore, look for sophomore Tre’on Johnson to get into the mix.
LCC doesn’t have a bona fide superstar, but they have nails tough kids who will compete to the bitter end. They are certainly talented enough to get back to Columbus, but repeating is obviously not easy to do. Cincinnati North College Hill and Akron SVSM are the only D-III teams to do it in the past 23 years.
Chesapeake (21-5, lost in State Semis)

OHSH on Chesapeake: After years of coming oh so close, the Chesapeake Panthers finally got over the hump last season and made a trip to Columbus. The ‘Peake lost to eventual state champion, Lima CC, in the semis but it was a milestone season nonetheless.
Head coach Ryan Davis and his Panthers will once again be a favorite out of the Southeast with three starters returning and the addition of a very good transfer.
Leading the returnees is 6-foot-2 senior Nathan Copley and his 19.1 points per game. Copley didn’t have a very good state semi-final game finishing just 6-of-22 from the field and 2-of-12 behind the arc. The senior is a volume scorer, so the numbers weren’t completely startling.
Colin Kennedy (6’7/Sr.) is a welcome addition back in the post after averaging 10.1 ppg. as a junior. Junior Austin McMaster also returns from the starting line up where dropped 15.4 points per contest a season ago.
Spring Valley (WV) transfer Eric Kennedy should help fill the void of departing seniors Trent Saunders and Peter Hintz. Though, Hintz was a high energy kid who made plays from the point guard spot.
Sugarcreek Garaway (18-6, lost in Regional Semifinals)

OHSH on Sugarcreek Garaway: This is the senior class Garaway fans have been waiting on since these kids were in 7th grade. This senior class destroyed its competition coming up through the junior high ranks, but everything changed as freshmen when Paul Honigford was moved up to varsity.
It turned out to be a good move for the varsity as Honigford helped lead the Pirates to a state runner-up finish, while scoring 12 points and grabbing10 rebounds in the title game against Ottawa-Glandorf back in 2008.
What happened to the rest of the crew? Well, most played jayvee along with freshmen ball and eventually others stopped playing basketball or moved to other school districts.
Now, after four years, six kids have reunited in hopes to make one last run. Honigford, who recently committed to D2 Ashland, returns for his fourth season in the post for head coach Dave Shutt. Honigford averaged 16 points per game as a junior earning him AP 1st Team All-Ohio honors.
He will be joined by fellow returning starters Hunter Shaw (7.0 ppg.), Ryan Troyer (10.0 ppg.), Tanner Klein (5.0 ppg.), and Duane Troyer (6.0 ppg.). Shawn and Klein are both part of the senior class, while Ryan Troyer is a junior and Duane a sophomore.
Duane Troyer really came on towards the end of last season especially during the tournament. Look for this sophomore to have a big season.
Seniors Zach Renner and Jordan Miller along with junior Seth Miller saw action last year as well.
Cleveland Central Catholic (13-12, lost in Regional Semifinals)

League: North Coast League

OHSH on Cleveland Central Catholic: It’s no secret Cleveland CC will be battle-tested by the time tournament play starts. Playing the likes of Akron SVSM, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Akron Hoban, Cleveland Benedictine, Garfield Heights, Lutheran East, Bedford Chanel (2), and Cleveland VASJ (2) can’t hurt.
Other than Cincinnati Taft, no D-III team will play a schedule of this magnitude. This really helped CCC in earning the D-III state championship in 2009, and after struggling through much of last season with injuries, the Ironmen made a run to the regional semis.
Senior Anton Grady (Cleveland State) missed over half of last season with an injury, but when he returned things started to turn around. If it weren’t for coming out flat against Orrville in the regional semis, perhaps they could have made another run at the title last season.
The Ironmen will once again be a force this season with the return of Grady along with junior guard Ra’Saun Smith, sophomore guard Gregory Snyder, and senior post Marcus Jones.
If Grady can stay healthy, we wouldn’t be surprised to see CCC in Columbus once again.
Bloom-Carroll (16-7, lost in District Final)
Head Coach: Tom Petty (31st Year)
League: Mid-State League- Buckeye Division
Fun Facts: 1994 State Semifinalist

OHSH on Bloom-Carroll: Veteran Bloom-Carroll boss Tom Petty has plenty of wins in his legendary career, and look for the total to increase even more after this season.
The Bulldogs fell short of a regional birth last season when they fell to Centerburg in the district championship game, 49-46. B-C lost some talent from last year’s team, but the return of sophomore point guard Isaac McGlone and junior wing forward AJ Ireland should be a comforting feeling for Petty.
McGlone was very good for a freshman last season, but he will be even better this year. He is a savvy point guard with a good IQ for the game, who reminds us a lot of an old school point guard.
Oh, by the way, the addition of Lancaster transfer Steve Bridgeman (6’5/Sr.) will be an ace in the hole. Bridgeman is a solid college prospect with the ability to score, knock down shots, and bring some physicality to the table from his years spent in the Ohio Capital Conference. Taft got plenty of transfers, but Bridgeman may be the most influential transfer in D-III.
Also returning is junior Robbie Watts and senior Connor Canini. Look for sophomores Dalton VanAtta, AJ James, and Evan Baker along with freshman Joey Schmitz to garner quite a bit of playing time as well.
This will be the best B-C team since 2005 and 2006 with a chance to make a deep tournament run.
Jamestown Greeneview (18-4, lost in District Final)
Head Coach: Bill Green (22nd Year)
League: Ohio Heritage Conference
Fun Facts: Lost to LeBron James and Akron SVSM in 2000 D-III State Finals
Returning Starters: Ronnie Drinnon (6’7/Jr.), Evan Bradds (6’6/So.), Eric Green (5’11/Jr.), Zach Raynor (6’2/Sr.)

OHSH on Jamestown Greeneview: The Southwest will once again have its share of quality teams, and Greeneview will definitely be one of those teams.
The Rams return four starters including inside mates junior Ronnie Drinnon and sophomore Evan Bradds. Together, along with Washington and Stanford at Taft, they may be the best duo in the post in D-III.
Bradds averaged around 15 points per game as frosh and Drinnon was good for 14. Their games are a bit different as Bradds likes to work from the outside-in and is more of a face-up big, while Drinnon does most of his damage in the paint.
Junior Eric Green and senior Zach Raynor also return to the starting line up after solid seasons a year ago. Juniors Kenny Lawson and Garrett Hudson also return from last year’s district runner-up squad.
Coach Green expects juniors Adam Elzey and Alex Vanderwissell along with senior Jason Bradds to contribute quite a bit as well.
With three underclassmen returning to the starting line up and five of the next seven being juniors it’s clear the Rams are set for at least a two-year run.
Orrville (21-6, State Runner-Up)
Head Coach: Sly Slaughter (2nd Year)
League: Ohio Cardinal Conference
Fun Facts: Won State Championships in 1993, 1995, and 1996
Returning Starters: Zach Wasson (6’5/Sr.), Max Pirman (6’5/Sr.), Dan Groves (6’0/Sr.)

OHSH on Orrville: The Orrville Red Riders were one of the most dominant basketball programs in Ohio from 1980 through 1996. The Red Riders made nine regional tournaments with four trips to the state tournament including three championships (1992, 1995, and 1996).
The success all came under the late, legendary Orrville head coach, Steve Smith. In 1992, Smith won his first state championship with a kid named Sly Slaughter running the point guard spot.
Fast forward 18 years and Slaughter was now the new head coach at Orrville. In his first season, Slaughter led the Red Riders to a state runner-up finish losing to Lima CC in the championship game, 60-57.
It was a remarkable season for a team who had not been to a regional since 1996, which was the last of its three titles. The Red Riders dropped down to D-III last season a place they had won two of their state championship (’92 and ’95).
What can Slaughter’s bunch do for an encore? With three starters returning, optimism is high once again.
Senior Zach Wasson returns after averaging 19 points per game as a junior. Wasson is a rugged player with a will to win.
Wasson will be joined by fellow returning starters seniors Max Pirman (3.8 ppg.) and Dan Groves. Pirman has committed to play football for Indiana, while Groves was unable to play in the state tournament.
There will be plenty of newcomers this season, and they will obviously be the key to just how successful Orrville can be. Outside shooting has to be a serious concern.
Ironton (21-4, lost in the Regional Final)
Head Coach: Mark LaFon (7th Year)
League: Independent
Fun Facts: 2005 D-III State Runner-Up

OHSH on Ironton: The Ironton Tigers have long been known as one of the state’s top football powers, but over the last seven years the Tigers have slowly become a very good round ball school.
Ironton nearly won the 2005 D-III state championship, but its monumental upset bid fell short against Cincinnati North College Hill. The Tigers made the regional in 2004 and the regional final in 2006 and last season, so the proof is in the pudding.
This year’s Tigers could create more history, but they will need to replace Tim Kochendoerfer (20.4) and substitutes JP Taylor and Erin Edens.
Four starters return in seniors Malcolm Morton and Travis Elliott along with super sophomores Zacc Carter and Trey Fletcher.
Senior sharp-shooter Tommy Waginger, senior Josh Murphy, and junior Nolan Johnson are also back to provide depth for the Tigers.
Carter and Fletcher are part of a terrific sophomore class, which also includes Nick Culbertson, Trevor White, and Josh Glover. One of our most trusted sources in Southeast Ohio believes Ironton’s sophomore class may be the best he has seen in his 40-plus years of watching basketball in that part of the state.
St. Clairsville (16-5, lost in Sectional Final)
Head Coach: Kim Clifford (20th Year)
League: Buckeye 8/OVAC
Fun Facts: 4th Year in D-III
Returning Starters: Allen Derosa (6’5/Sr.), McKenzie Koehler (6’3/Sr.), Dan Monteroso (6’1/So.)

OHSH on St. Clairsville: The St. Clairsville Red Devils are not a state-power by any account, but they have won a ton of basketball games in head coach Kim Clifford’s 19 seasons at the Belmont County school.
The Red Devils dropped to D-III back in 2008 after a long stint in D2. St. Clairsville reached the district championship back in 2008 only to fall to eventual state runner-up, Garaway. The Red Devils actually led that game after three quarters of play.
Last year, it appeared the Red Devils were primed for a long tournament run but West Muskingum upset the 16-win team in the sectional final, 82-73.
Coach Clifford mentioned defense being a concern to us, and rightfully so. West Muskingum didn’t come close to scoring 82 points in a game last year until the sectional final. The following contest, the Tornadoes scored just 42 points in a district semi-final loss to Barnesville.
Giving up points is not something St. Clairsville is use to as they usually pride itself on full court man-to-man ball pressure creating chaos for its opponent. A season ago, the Red Devils scored more points but the defense fell off. We don’t look for this trend to continue. Coach Clifford loves the defensive end of the floor, so we have no reason to believe they won’t be better with the athletes they posses.
The Red Devils welcome back one of the state’s top sophomores in Danny Monteroso (21.5 ppg.) Monteroso earned AP 3rd Team All-Ohio accolades as a freshman. The lefty is a scoring machine with D1 athleticism. His overall game isn’t completely polished at this point, but in D-III, he has the ability to completely take a game over on the offensive end.
Joining Monteroso in the starting line up is lengthy senior Allen Derosa along with strong senior McKenzie Koehler. Derosa is 6-foot-5 but prefers to play face up possessing a sweet stroke, good athleticism, and the ability to alter shots on the defensive end.
Ottawa-Glandorf (18-5, lost in District Final)
