Five Things We Learned Friday: Regional Semifinals
1. There will be a new state champion in Division II: En route to its first state championship last season Winton Woods dispatched Trotwood-Madison 28-7 in the Division II Region 8 Final. This year the Rams got payback. Behind an explosive effort from senior RB Antwan Gilbert (over 200 yards and four TDs), Trotwood knocked off Winton Woods 42-23 at Princeton.
2. 5-5 teams from the MAC are dangerous: For the second straight year a Midwest Athletic Conference team that entered the Division VI Region 24 playoffs at 5-5 has made the regional final. After Marion Local made a run to the state semifinals last season with a .500 regular season record, Minster matched that feat with a shocking 30-26 win over Marion Local in Wapakoneta. Minster opened the season with four straight losses to Fort Loramie, Lehman Catholic, Delphos St. John’s and Marion, which beat the Wildcats 41-6 back on Sept. 17. Since then Minster, under first year head coach Nate Moore, has gone 7-1. The Wildcats, which also lost to Coldwater in Week 10, now get another rematch with Lehman in the Region 24 Final next Friday.
3. Kenton and Alter survive and advance: In D-IV’s loaded Region 16, which featured four of the state’s top six teams, Kenton and Alter have survived to move on to next week’s final. No. 2 Kenton beat No. 1 Clinton-Massie 36-28 at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium, while No. 6 Alter beat No. 4 Jonathan Alder 28-14 at Troy.
4. Don’t kick the ball to Bridgeport’s Garrett Price: A tremendously versatile player, Price notched his sixth return TD of the season with an 80-yard kickoff return in the Bulldogs 21-20 win over Newark Catholic in the D-VI Region 23 semifinals at John D. Sulsberger Memorial Stadium in Zanesville. Price has returned four punts and two kickoffs for TDs this season. He also has six rushing TDs, five receiving TDs and has booted 30 PATs, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter against the Green Wave.
5. Where’s the Defense? They say defense wins championships, but offense was on display Friday. Of the 24 teams that won games Friday, half scored 40 or more points. McComb and Hartley were close too – they each scored 39. Genoa scored 38.
