Friday’s Regional Quarterfinals: Final scores and what we learned – “Don’t Mess with the MAC”

Five Things We Learned Friday: Regional Quarterfinals
1. Don’t draw a Midwest Athletic Conference team in the first round: Word of warning for teams in Division V and VI next year – don’t draw a MAC team in the first round. If you do you are going home. Friday, Delphos St. John’s, Marion Local and Minster all won Division VI games by the combined score of 166-49. That makes the MAC’s all-time record in regional quarterfinals against non-MAC opponents a staggering 43-1. DSJ beat Edgerton 73-21, while Marion Local blasted Fort Loramie 49-7. Minster’s 44-21 win over Springfield Catholic Central really signified the conference’s overwhelmingly successful brand of football. Minster was the No. 8 seed and finished fifth in the MAC. SCC was the No. 1 seed and won the Ohio Heritage Conference. MAC teams Anna and Coldwater face each other in a D-V quarterfinal on Saturday. As far as the second round goes, the MAC is 46-6 in Regional Semifinals against non-MAC teams.
2. Kenton is a lot scarier in person: Just ask host and previously unbeaten Carlisle, which got beat 62-20 by the Wildcats in a Region 16 quarterfinal. The Indians trailed just 16-0 after the first quarter, but Kenton put 32 on the board in the second and led 48-0 at halftime. Wow is right.
3. Alter and Winton Woods are still alive in title defense: Alter which is going for its third straight D-IV state title advanced to the regional semifinals by beating previously unbeaten and host North College Hill 35-14. Winton Woods, the defending D-II state champion, hosted Dayton Carroll and advanced to the regional semifinals with a 40-21 victory.
4. Regular Season win streak doesn’t carry over to Postseason: Bucyrus Wynford will enter next season with the longest regular season win streak in the state. The Royals have won 48 straight in Weeks 1-10 and have been 10-0 four years in row. Friday they were ousted from the playoffs in the first round by Dalton 34-21.
5. Beating a team twice in a year? Ehh, not so hard…: There were four games Friday that were rematches from regular season meetings and all four teams that won in the regular season won again in Week 11. In Division IV, Hartley beat Amanda-Clearcreek and Orrville beat Wooster Triway. In D-VI, McDonald beat Berlin Center Western Reserve and Covington beat Ansonia.
