MVP Fab 5 Rankings: Poll Champions Crowned

The 2010 high school football regular season is over and so too is the chase for the MVP Fab 5 Poll Titles. There were three repeat winners this season as Wayne (D-I), Trotwood-Madison (D-II) and Delphos St. John’s (D-VI) each defended their 2009 Fab 5 championships. There were three new winners as well. Below we announce, unveil and unleash the final Fab 5s for 2010.
Final Fab 5 Rankings:
Division I
1. Wayne (7-3): The Warriors started off sluggish with two straight losses but rebounded to win seven of their last eight games and earn a chare of the GWOC Central title. Wayne is also in the Region 4 playoffs and faces host Middletown (10-0) on Saturday. Senior RB Anthone Taylor is second in the GWOC in rushing (1,079 yards), while senior QB Braxton Miller, an Ohio State recruit, has thrown for 1,370 yards and nine TDs. He’s also rushed for 10 TDs. Previous: 1
2. Centerville (8-2): Speaking of two-game losing streaks, Centerville suffered one of its own in Weeks 7 and 8. Since then they’ve rebounded to post two straight wins and earn a Division I Region 4 playoff berth. The Elks face host Moeller (8-2) on Saturday. Previous: 2
3. Springfield (8-2): The Wildcats have had a memorable season already. Springfield won a share of the GWOC Central title, earned a playoff berth and will host its first postseason game in history on Saturday when it entertains Hilliard Darby (8-2) in a Region 3 quarterfinal. Previous: 4
4. Troy (8-2): Look who is headed to the postseason! The Trojans earned their first playoff bid since 2004 with a 57-7 win over Sidney that propelled them into the No. 8 spot in Region 3. The Trojans play at Pickerington Central (9-0) on Saturday. Win or lose, Troy has had a remarkable season. Previous: 5
5. Northmont (6-4): The T-Bolts missed out on the playoffs and a share of the GWOC Central title by losing to Springfield in the season finale. It was still a very strong year for Northmont, which lost only to playoff teams Colerain, Moeller, Springfield and Wayne. Previous: 3
Division II
1. Trotwood-Madison (8-2): The Rams won their third straight GWOC North title this season and earned another berth in the Region 8 playoffs. Trotwood hosts Harrison (5-5) in a regional quarterfinal Friday. Senior RB Antwan Gilbert probably won’t reach 2,000 yards again this season (unless the Rams go on an extended postseason run), but he’s still managed 1,051 yards. Previous: 1
2. Carroll (7-3): Needing a win in Week 10 over Fenwick to make the postseason, Carroll delivered. The Patriots punched a ticket to the playoffs for the first time since 2007 with a dramatic 28-21 last minute win over the Falcons. Carroll travels to Winton Woods (9-1) for a Region 8 quarterfinal on Friday. Previous: 3
3. Tecumseh (7-3): The Arrows had a lot of questions entering this season and have answered nearly all of them with flying colors. Tecumseh snapped a two-game losing skid and beat Bellefontaine 41-7 to earn the program’s third straight playoff berth and fourth in five years. The Arrows are at Kings (9-1) in a Region 8 quarterfinal Friday. Previous: 4
4. Wilmington (7-3): The Hurricane won’t be playing in Week 11, but they notched a successful season. After a 5-1 start, Wilmington dropped two of its last four games to heavyweights Turpin (27-20) and Kings (23-0). No shame in that. Previous: 5
5. Wapakoneta (7-3): After going 1-9 last year, the Redskins put together a great run. Back-to-back losses in Weeks 9 and 10 to Western Buckeye League stalwarts and playoff teams Kenton and Elida ended Wapak’s season and postseason hopes. But, the fact that the Redskins were in WBL title and playoff contention in the final two weeks speaks volumes. Previous: 2
Division III
1. Eaton (10-0): Junior RB Nate Clark ran for four TDs as the Eagles blasted Preble County rival Preble Shawnee 48-7 to cap a perfect season. Eaton, which won the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwest Division title, hosts Jackson (9-1) in a Region 12 quarterfinal Saturday that the Ironmen are going to have to drive 130 miles to get to. Previous: 1
2. Springfield Shawnee (9-1): The Braves won their ninth straight game, captured the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Division title outright and notched their second shutout of the season with a 47-0 win over Stebbins. Shawnee hosts Washington Court House (8-2) in a Region 12 quarterfinal on Saturday. Previous: 2
3. Tippecanoe (9-1): The Red Devils earned their sixth straight playoff berth this season and only a 21-18 loss to Springfield Shawnee kept them from perfection. Tipp hosts Elida (8-2) in a Region 10 quarterfinal on Saturday. Previous: 3
4. Elida (8-2): The Bulldogs are one of Ohio’s better stories this season. After going 0-10 in 2008 and 5-5 last year, Elida is headed to the playoffs for the first time since 1982. The Bulldogs travel to Tipp (9-1) for a Region 10 quarterfinal on Saturday. Previous: 4
5. Dunbar (7-3): The Wolverines closed the regular season by beating Meadowdale 62-14 for their sixth win in seven games. As a result, Dunbar finds itself in the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Wolverines play at Cincinnati McNicholas (8-2) in a Region 12 quarterfinal on Saturday. Previous: 5
Division IV
1. Clinton-Massie (10-0): The Falcons won their 32nd straight regular season game by holding Clinton County rival East Clinton to 37 total yards in a 540 win. Senior RB Jordan Scanlon also went over 2,000 yards for the season by rushing for 199 and five TDs. Clinton-Massie hosts postseason newcomer Cincinnati Taft (6-4) this Friday in a Region 16 quarterfinal. Previous: 2
2. Alter (8-2): The Knights had their 35-game Greater Catholic League winning streak snapped with a 13-6 loss to archrival Chaminade Julienne. Alter still won its 10th straight GCL North Division title though and has now made the playoffs 10 straight seasons. The Knights open Region 16 postseason play at North College Hill (10-0) in a quarterfinal on Friday. Previous: 1
3. Carlisle (10-0): The Indians have had a remarkable run this season. Carlisle won its second straight outright SWBL Buckeye Division title and for the first time in history locked up back-to-back playoff berths with a 41-3 win over Dixie. The reward? Getting to host Kenton (9-1) in the Region 16 quarterfinals on Friday. Previous: 3
4. Waynesville (8-2): The Spartans entered this season with a new coach, new QB and a lot of questions. They’ve answered all successfully. Led by junior QB Luke Credit, the Spartans are in the playoffs for the fourth straight season and face host Jonathan Alder (9-1) in a Region 16 quarterfinal on Friday. Waynesville’s lone losses are to Clinton-Massie and Carlisle. Previous: 5
5. Fenwick (7-3): The Falcons lived on the edge all season and finally fell off the playoff bubble with a loss to Carroll in the regular season finale. It was Fenwick’s third straight loss to close the season after opening 7-0. The Falcons are definitely a playoff caliber team, but they won’t get to showcase that in the postseason. Previous: 4
Division V
1. Lima Central Catholic (9-1): For just the second time this year, the T-Birds allowed an opponent to reach double-figures. That opponent however – high octane and then D-VI No. 2 Ada – was held 34 points below its average. LCC claimed a Northwest Conference outright title by beating the Bulldogs 35-21. This Saturday the T-Birds open postseason play by hosting undefeated Tinora in a Region 18 quarterfinal. Previous: 1
2. Anna (8-2): The Rockets closed the regular season with 49-7 win over Parkway and finished in a three-way tie for second in the Midwest Athletic Conference. This week Anna faces one of those teams it tied with for second as Coldwater (7-3) comes calling for the tandem’s second game of the season. Anna beat Coldwater 38-28 in Week 3, ad will try o do so again in Saturday’s Region 20 quarterfinal. Previous: 2
3. Coldwater (7-3): Some didn’t give the Cavaliers much of a chance to extend their playoff string to 14 straight appearances this year, but under new head coach Chip Otten, Coldwater got it done. The Cavs now own the state’s second longest consecutive playoff streak (Columbus DeSales has been to 17 straight postseasons). This week Coldwater gets a rematch with fellow MAC heavyweight Anna (8-2). The Cavs are at the Rockets in a Region 20 quarterfinal Saturday. Previous: 3
4. East Clinton (8-2): The Astros didn’t stand a chance against Clinton-Massie, losing 54-0 in the season finale, but they still managed to earn a Region 20 playoff berth. East Clinton plays host Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (7-3) in a quarterfinal on Saturday. It’s the Astros second playoff berth in three years. Previous: 4
5. Versailles (6-4): The Tigers made strides this year in head coach Bob Olwin’s third season. A 40-15 win over St. Henry in Week 10 should provide some momentum to build on. The Tigers started 4-0 before losing four of the next five to playoff teams Delphos St. John’s, Coldwater, Minster and Anna. Previous: NR
Division VI
1. Delphos St. John’s (10-0): The Blue Jays wrapped up their second straight Midwest Athletic Conference outright title and won their 18th straight MAC game by smoking New Bremen 50-16. DSJ is looking to get to its third straight state championship game and begins postseason play Friday with a Region 22 quarterfinal against visiting Edgerton (7-3). Previous: 1
2. Marion Local (8-2): The Flyers ended the regular season with a 47-7 win over Fort Recovery and finished in a three-way tie for second in the MAC with D-V playoff teams Anna and Coldwater. The Flyers open Region 24 playoff action Friday on the road at Fort Loramie (8-2). This quarterfinal is a rematch of last year’s regional final that Marion won 27-0. Previous: 2
3. Lehman Catholic (9-1): The Cavaliers remained unbeaten in Metro Buckeye Conference play and won their second straight outright title with a 41-6 win over fellow playoff team Fort Loramie. Senior RB Kaleb Goins spearheads the Cavs offense having rushed for 1,676 yards and a record-tying 27 TDs this season. Goins already owns Lehman’s career records for rushing yards (4,696) and TDs (67). Lehman opens postseason play Friday by hosting Lockland (6-4) in a Region 24 quarterfinal. Previous: 3
4. Covington (10-0): The Buccs won the Cross County Conference title outright and reached the postseason for the 11th time in 12 years with a 59-20 win over Mississinawa Valley. This week Covington faces fellow CCC foe Ansonia (9-1) for the second straight year in the first round of the playoffs. Covington beat Ansonia 28-21 in Week 8 and ousted the Tigers in the Region 24 quarterfinals last year. The rematch is Friday at Covington. Previous: 4
5. Springfield Catholic Central (9-1): The Irish rebounded from a Week 2 loss to Marion Local to win eight straight and capture the Ohio Heritage Conference title outright. SCC closed the season with a 30-7 win over Mechanicsburg and now moves on to Week 11 for the seventh time in eight years. The Irish host Minster (5-5) in a Region 24 quarterfinal Friday. Previous: NR
