Markus Crider visited Providence last weekend and according to his high school coach, Travis Trice has verbally committed to play for Providence beginning in 2011-12. Crider is the second Wayne High School player to commit to a high major school for next year. Teammate Travis Trice committed to Michigan State in August.
“Markus possesses Big East athleticism, size, length and strength,” Wayne High School Coach Travis Trice said. “He runs the floor extremely well, is an outstanding rebounder and is a very good defender. Markus is a highly skilled athlete who is versatile enough to play and defend multiple positions. Providence Head Coach Keno Davis and his Assistant, Chris Davis said that they were looking for a versatile player who possessed great athleticism, was a good defender and had a strong work ethic. That described Markus to a tee. He is a perfect fit for Providence’s pressure defense and fast breaking system.”
As a junior, Crider averaged 15.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.6 apg and 1.8 bpg. He led Wayne to the Greater Western Ohio Conference Championship (GWOC). His team finished with a 20-3 record. Following the season, Crider earned First Team All GWOCC honors, was an All Metro Dayton selection and was chosen Honorable Mention All State. Markus is a 2011 preseason All State candidate.
“I really like the coaches and the players are great,” Markus Crider said. “Coach Keno Davis has done a good job of recruiting a good group of guys. The facilities at Providence are great to say the least; some of the best that I have ever seen. I really liked the campus and the city, it’s a gorgeous area. The Dunkin’ Donuts Center seems like a place where opponents would hate to play and the Friars have great fan support on campus, in the city and throughout the state of Rhode Island.”
Crider’s father, Michael Suber said,” I really felt comfortable with Coach Chris Davis throughout the recruiting process. He developed a very good relationship with Markus and me. After meeting with Coach Keno Davis during his visit to Huber Heights, Markus and I left feeling more comfortable with him than we had with any other head coach that we had met. We liked Keno and Chris’ honest approach to recruiting and dealing with young men.”
Crider added, “I love Coach Keno Davis’ fast breaking and pressing system. It is a style that I like and that I am very familiar with after playing for Coach Trice at Wayne. Not to mention that playing in The BIG EAST, which is the best basketball conference in the country, is a dream come true.”
Markus Crider had offers from Michigan, DePaul and Wisconsin. He also had interest from Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Nebraska.
