MVP’s Fab 5 Rankings: Week 6

The Ansonia-Mississinawa Valley football game is always a big one. But this year it’s big for more reasons than just football.
The rivals – separated by seven miles – will tangle Friday night in Ansonia in a contest that’s being deemed a “Pink Out.”
At the game, money will be collected and raised for two foundations that honor two former students at Ansonia who lost battles with cancer.
One foundation is in honor of Dylan Everman. Dylan was a 13-year old seventh-grader at Ansonia when he lost his battle with Lukemia on February 4, 2007.
The other foundation is in honor of Kirsten Schlarman. Kirsten was a 14-year old eighth-grader at Ansonia when she lost her battle to Osteosarcoma on February 18, 2010.
As for the game, expect Ansonia to win.
The Tigers have never lost to their Darke County rivals (34-0 all-time against MV) and are undefeated this season. Ansonia is averaging 45 points per game.
Mississinawa Valley enters 1-4.
Regardless of the outcome Friday, everyone at this game will be a winner.
MVP Big Games This Week
After several weeks where Greater Western Ohio Conference, Midwest Athletic Conference and Greater Catholic League teams have stolen the spotlight, this week attention turns to the Central Buckeye Conference. Divisional play starts this week in the CBC and the conference’s Top 4 teams all square off against each other.
Undefeated and D-III No. 2 Tippecanoe travels to Springfield Shawnee (4-1), while the CBC’s other unbeaten – D-III No.3 Kenton Ridge – hosts D-II No. 4 Tecumseh (4-1).
Other Key Games:
Springfield at Wayne
Versailles at Delphos St. John’s
St. Henry at Marion Local
Trotwood-Madison at Piqua
Waynesville at Dixie
Here are the Week 6 Rankings:
Division I
1. Centerville (5-0): After emotional and convincing wins the last two weeks over Alter and St. Ignatius, Centerville beat Springboro 28-13 last Friday. The Elks led just 14-13 at halftime but pulled away in the second half. Another rivalry game awaits this week with a trip to Kettering Fairmont (2-3) scheduled. Previous: 1
2. Springfield (4-1): The Wildcats have won four straight and have shown the ability to dismantle opposing offenses. Springfield hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game and the last three weeks has allowed 20 points total. The Wildcats most recent win was a 36-6 dismantling of Trotwood-Madison. This week the Wildcats face a tough test at No. 3 Wayne (3-2). Previous: 2
3. Wayne (3-2): The Warriors are on a three-game win streak but will be tested this week with No. 2 Springfield (4-1) heading to Huber Heights. Senior QB Braxton Miller has continued to excel and the Warriors running game behind Anthone Taylor is motoring along. Previous: 3
4. Troy (4-1): Speaking of defense, few area teams have played it as well as Troy the last few weeks. In successive wins over Fairborn, Springboro and Beavercreek, the Trojans have allowed just six points and have two shutouts. This week Troy travels to Butler (2-3). Previous: 5
5. Northmont (3-2): The T-Bolts won last week but needed OT to survive on the road at Lebanon 41-38. Offense has been an issue for Northmont which ranks 13th (out of 18 teams) in the GWOC in total yards per game. Sophomore QB Cameron Belton however does lead the GWOC in passing with 798 yards. This week the T-Bolts entertain winless Beavercreek on homecoming. Previous: 4
Division II
1. Carroll (4-1): The Patriots stubbed their toe last week with a 23-8 loss at undefeated Roger Bacon. Carroll had more first downs (16) than the Spartans and converted nine third downs (compared to none for RB) but failed to get the win. They also doubled up the Spartans in time of possession (31:23-16:37). This week the Patriots get back on track with a game at Purcell Marian (1-4). Previous: 1
2. Wapakoneta (4-1): The Redskins made noise statewide with their convincing 42-21 win over previously unbeaten and highly ranked Ottawa-Glandorf. This week Wapak is at St. Marys (1-4). Previous: 4
3. Trotwood-Madison (3-2): Where is the Rams offense? It’s missing. In the last two weeks – and in back-to-back losses to Wayne and Springfield – Trotwood has managed 13 total points. The Rams rank 15th (out of 18 teams) in the GWOC in total offense. That’s not going to cut it. This week Trotwood hits the road for another test at Piqua (3-2). Previous: 2
4. Tecumseh (4-1): Since losing to Fairborn in the opener, the Arrows have rattled off four straight wins and are averaging 34.5 points in those victories. A similar output will be needed this week with a road test at undefeated Kenton Ridge looming. Previous: 4
5. Wilmington (4-1): The Hurricane continue to roll. Wilmington has won four straight but the one knock is that those four wins are against opponents who are a combined 2-18. This week Walnut Hills (3-2) heads north to Clinton County. Previous: 5
Division III
1. Eaton (5-0): The Eagles offense gets a lot of the headlines and rightfully so. But…Eaton has proved it has a pretty good defense too. Through five weeks the Eagles have allowed 26 total points. Their latest victim? Oakwood, which they beat 31-6. Their next victim? Monroe (3-2). Previous: 1
2. Tippecanoe (5-0): Déjà vu…there’s that word again “defense.” Although they’ve scored more than 21 points just twice this year, the Red Devils have allowed just 21 total points this season. No one has scored more than seven points on them in a game. This week that defense faces a stiff test at Springfield Shawnee (4-1). Previous: 2
3. Kenton Ridge (5-0): The Cougars scored less than 36 points for the first time this season but still shut out Northwestern 23-0. This week KR’s biggest test to date looms with Tecumseh (4-1) coming to town. Previous: 3
4. Dunbar (3-2): The Wolverines have won three straight and last week notched an impressive 13-7 win at Findlay. This week things get ratcheted up tenfold with a trip to Kentucky power Louisville Male (5-1) on the docket. Male is ranked No. 3 in the Kentucky 6-A poll (big schools). Previous: 5
5. Chaminade Julienne (2-3): The Eagles remain in the rankings despite back-to-back losses. Why? Those losses – by a combined 10 points – have come against undefeated Roger Bacon and one-loss McNicholas. CJ could drop its third straight with a test at Hamilton Badin (2-3) looming this week. Previous: 4
Division IV
1. Alter (4-1): The Knights beat Hamilton Badin for the 13th straight time – barely. Alter eked out a 10-7 win and now turns its attention to another stiff test at McNicholas (4-1). Previous: 1
2. Clinton-Massie (5-0): The Falcons cruised past winless Miami Trace as Jordie Scanlon rushed for 234 yards and four TDs on 22 carries. This week C-M is at London (2-3). Previous: 2
3. Fenwick (5-0): The Falcons jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter (ran seven plays for 210 yards and three TDs) and cruised to a 49-14 win over Purcell Marian. Both Joey Robertson and Jimmy Turvey rushed for over 100 yards and had two TDs. This week the Falcons face a huge test at unbeaten Roger Bacon. Previous: 4
4. Ottawa-Glandorf (4-1): The Titans followed up their impressive win over previously unbeaten Kenton by getting manhandled 42-21 by Wapakoneta. O-G tries to right the ship this week by hosting Elida (3-2). Previous: 3
5. Carlisle (5-0): The Indians slapped a 55-0 shutout on Northridge. This week they host Milton-Union (2-3) in what should be a good game. It’s the first time the teams have met since a 24-14 win by Milton in 2005. Previous: 5
Division V
1. Lima Central Catholic (4-1): The T-Birds are getting no love from AP voters, but hard to understand why. Their only loss is a season opening setback at D-VI No. 1 Delphos St. John’s. Since then they’ve rattled off four wins by the combined score of 185-13. No Joke. Their latest victim? Delphos Jefferson who they beat 42-0. Up next is visit from winless Spencerville. Did we mention the T-Birds have a junior QB that’s already been offered by Bowling Green and a senior LB that’s been offered by Air Force? Previous: 2
2. Anna (3-2): Do the Rockets deserve to remain in the Top 2 after two straight losses? Ask yourself this if you don’t think so: How many other teams on this list would beat Delphos St. John’s and Marion Local back-to-back. The answer? None. This week Anna gets back in the win column at New Bremen (1-4). Don’t expect the Rockets to drop another regular season game either. Previous: 1
3. Coldwater (3-2): The Cavaliers ran their win streak against Versailles to six straight games and handed the Tigers their first loss of the season with a 24-7 setback. Aaron Rammel led the way by running for three TDs. This week Coldwater hosts Parkway (2-3). Previous: 4
4. Versailles (4-1): The Tigers faced their toughest test to date last week and fell for the first time this year 24-7 to Coldwater. Things don’t get any easier this week – in fact they get harder – with a trio to undefeated and D-VI No. 1 Delphos St. John’s scheduled. Previous: 3
5. St. Henry (2-3): Dixie (4-1) can also make a case for being ranked No. 5 but it boils down to this: Would Dixie beat Eaton, Coldwater and/or Delphos St. John’s? The answer is no. And St. Henry lost to Eaton and Coldwater by a combined three points. This week the Redskins face another brutal challenge at undefeated and D-VI No. 2 Marion Local. Previous: 5
Division VI
1. Delphos St. John’s (5-0): The Blue Jays just keep rolling along and through the competition. The latest victim? St. Henry, which fell 31-7. Up next is a visit from Versailles (4-1). Previous: 1
2. Marion Local (5-0): The Flyers beat then D-V No. 5 Anna 27-18 on the road for their biggest win to date. Senior RB Niles Keller rushed for 165 yards and a TD in the win, while QB Ryan Mescher tossed three TD passes. This week the Flyers entertain St. Henry (2-3). Previous: 2
3. Covington (5-0): The Buccs won another close one, this time edging rival Miami East 40-34 in overtime. Senior RB Tyler Nofsinger led the way with 142 yards and three TDs on 18 carries. Jake Stewart added two TD runs, including the game winner in OT. This week the Buccs are at Twin Valley South (1-4). Previous: 3
4. Lehman Catholic (4-1): The Cavaliers crushed Troy Christian 69-12. Senior RB Kaleb Goins scored four TDs to tie the school’s career TD mark of 59. This week a big test awaits with D-V power Columbus Ready (3-2) heading west. Previous: 4
5. Ansonia (5-0): See Above. Previous: 5
