The average temperature for the summer this year has been close to 90 degrees. That doesn’t even take into consideration the humidity. Put those two together, and it has been HOT. Now take into consideration that many schools are getting ready for their fall two-a-days to begin. Again, it’s HOT.
The following are just some general guidelines to go by when the heat and humidity gets too high:
Temp. 80-90 & Humidity Under 70%
Watch those athletes who tend to be obese, water breaks every 30 mins.
Temp. 80-90 & Humidity Over 70%
Athletes should take a 30 minute water breaks lasting for 10 mins., Ice-down towels for cooling, Reduce time outside, consider postponing practice to a cooler time of day, and change wet clothing as needed.
Temp. 90-100 & Humidity Under 70%
Same as above, if available move into air-conditioning
Temp. 90-100 & Humidity Over 70%
Under these conditions it is best to suspend practice to a cooler time during the day, wearing tee shirts and shorts should be considered for practice, practice inside in air-conditioning if possible.
Enjoy the sun, but be safe. Always have cold water available, and allow athletes to take in as much water as needed.
