To friends and family, Tom Hausfeld and his second daughter, Kacie, were like two peas in a pod. They shared a bond, which was held together by laughter and love–for each other, for their family, and for volleyball.
Kacie, a junior at the University of Dayton, had been part of two state championship teams at Alter (2003, 2006). She had earned herself the starting setter position as a Flyer and helped lead her Flyers to the 2009 A-10 Championship.
Tom Hausfeld was right there with her every step of the way. He cheered on Kacie, as well as her sister, Ali, who played the sport for Duke. No matter the distance, Tom could always be found in the front row, cheering and supporting his daughters.
Now we must return that support, to remember and carry on the legacies of Tom and Kacie. Together, we are called to put forward the message that what they brought to the lives of many was far beyond friendship, and far beyond love. They gave their very being to make the world a better place.
From the foundations that have been laid by these two, comes a new opportunity, to live, to learn and to play the sport that brought the Hausfelds together. On Sunday, July 18th, the first annual Tom and Kacie Hausfeld Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be held at South Metro Sports in Centerville, Ohio.
This tournament, which is open to anyone in and above junior high, aims to raise money for a scholarship created in their honor. All proceeds from the event will be put towards the Kacie and Tom Hausfeld Scholarship Fund, which was created through the Dayton Foundation.
All teams must register by July 11, either by visiting http://www.hausfeld-memorial-volleyball.org or by calling 937-369-5323 or 937-681-9943. The teams, which must be co-ed (at least 2 girls), may include 6-8 players. A fee of $160 must be paid by the 11th of July as well.
The tournament will consist of a guaranteed 4 matches for each team in a round-robin format. Each team must specify their competition level as A) Very Competitive, B) Competitive, C) Recreational, or D) Jr. High. Upon conclusion of the non-elimination play, the teams will be bracketed into a single elimination playoff. The overall champions will be presented with a championship t-shirt for each team member.
Along with the tournament, there will also be a silent-auction, which will include gift cards and donated items from area businesses. Tournament t-shirts will be on sale for $15; participants will receive one free (as they are included in the registration fee). Because concessions will be open, it is requested that no outside food or drink is brought in.
