Coldwater will be naming their new Varsity Football Coach at the school board meeting on Tuesday, April 27th. Long time football coach John Reed resigned two weeks ago for family and health reasons which created the opening.
Chip Otten will be named as the new head coach at Coldwater High School. Coach Otten has been a Varsity Assistant at Coldwater for the past 8 years. Coldwater’s record during Coach Otten’s tenure has been 100-9, with 4 state appearances, and 2 State Titles (2005, 2007). Coldwater has won the MAC title 5 times during Coach Otten’s 8 years at Coldwater and has also had 5 undefeated regular seasons during this timeframe.
Prior to coming to Coldwater, Coach Otten was the Head Coach at Division I Middletown High School from 1995-2000. Other coaching assignments during his career has been as Assistant Coach at Middletown from 1987-1994 and at Valley View High School (2001). He has also served as a Graduate Assistant at Bowling Green State University, Ball State University, and Indiana University. Coach Otten’s overall coaching record at the High School level as an Assistant and Head Coach is 191-75.
Chip Otten’s father Barney Otten served as the Head Coach at Coldwater High School from 1974-1976 in which he compiled an overall record of 26-4 including 2 league championships. His 1976 team finished with a perfect 10-0 record.
Chip Otten is a graduate of Coldwater High School and played College Football at Bowling Green State University as a scholarship quarterback. He currently teaches Physical Education and Health in the Coldwater School system. Coach Otten and his wife Diane reside in Coldwater with their children Samantha, Brady, Troy, and Drew.
