Jefferson upsets Dunbar; Payne injured

For the Dayton Jefferson Broncos, Wednesday night was about taking the good with the bad. It is hard to say at this point which one outweighed the other.
First, the good news, Jefferson rallied from a 17-4 first quarter deficit to upset No. 1 ranked D-2 Dayton Dunbar (74-72). Couple that with the return of junior Cody Latimer, who had missed the last month with a toe injury, and it appeared to be a night that would not soon be forgotten. The 6-foot-2 junior led the Broncos with 17 points along with sophomore guard Devin Foster with a like amount.
However, it may not be forgotten for other reasons and now comes the bad. Michigan State signee Adreian Payne dislocated his right shoulder while blocking a shot in the third quarter. This report is according to the Dayton Daily News and head coach Art Winston.
Payne dove on the floor earlier in the game and then popped it out on the blocked shot attempt. The 6-foot-10 senior never returned, but remained on the bench until the game’s conclusion. He was taken to the hospital for x-rays following the contest, but his status is unknown.
Payne had eight points, seven rebounds, and five blocks before leaving the contest.
Oakland commit Ryan Bass led Dunbar (15-2) with 19 points, sophomore Deontae Hawkins tallied 17, and senior Geron Johnson added 14.
For the Broncos (13-5), this was obviously their biggest win of the year coming off back-to-back losses to Trotwood-Madison and Cincinnati Woodward.
Adding to the good news, it was the first time in over three decades that Jefferson beat the Wolverines and it was Winston’s anniversary.
Notes
Jefferson, who is clearly the most talented team in D-4, has five setbacks on the year but the company has been fast. The Broncos five losses are to unbeaten D-3 Middletown Madison, Pine Crest (FL), Dayton Thurgood Marshall, and D-I Trotwood Madison and Cincinnati Woodward.
