As of late, the battle between GCL North rivals Alter and Chaminade Julienne has consistently stayed under the Knights’ control. With the exception of a 2004 playoff defeat at the hands of CJ, Alter has won every game against the Eagles since 2001.
And just as in years past, this year is a battle for the GCL North Championship. With an Alter win, the title is theirs’, outright. The Eagles, however, must beat the Knights in order to claim a share of the 2009 league crown. Every year since the 2001 season, Alter has found itself in the driver’s seat for the league title.
“Obviously, Alter has a very aggressive ball-hawking defense that returns many key players from last year’s state championship team,” said Chaminade Julienne head coach Andy Helms. “Offensively, they have showed a very consistent ground game that has served them well. Our players are excited for the opportunity to play such an outstanding Alter team.”
The Eagles are led on the offense by junior running back Aaron Stokes and sophomore quarterback Michael Simpson. Stokes, who has run for 821 yards on 170 attempts, will most likely play a key part in tonight’s game for the Eagles.
However, Alter’s high octane defense will play the same role for the Knights. Entering Week 10, the Knights have made 11 interceptions and forced five fumbles. But for Alter’s head coach, Ed Domsitz, it’s not only been the defense that has been outstanding; it has been the offense as well.
“Zane Pitzer (junior) has not only been able to learn the offense, but to run the offense effectively,” said the veteran coach of 35 years. “He has a pretty level personality, which allows him to go out and play well on a consistent basis.”
Both coaches commented that they look forward to tonight’s game, as do their players. Each team, having clinched a playoff spot already, is simply trying to enter Week 11 on a high note.
To many of the fans, this game could be much closer than expected. Alter and CJ have the talent, the physicality and the intensity to make this game one for the ages.
Yes, it’s that time of the year again…Alter and CJ are going at it again. Game kicks off at 7:30 at Northmont High School…will you be there?
