Eaton wraps up SWBL Southwestern title; Oakwod beats Bellbrook

Eaton defeats Valley View, 20-14
I’ve got lots of analysis for you, so let’s head right to it.
For some reason, the View rarely let QB Kyle Pohl stand in the pocket. Lots of rollouts, options and other play calls that seemed to pull him out of his comfort zone. Pohl’s a bit of a statue, you see. But, he packs a bazooka with a laser guidance system on top. He’ll do work for you out of the pocket.
Eaton RB Dalton Caudill had probably the worst game of his career, and ended up on the sidelines–roughly at halftime–with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. He was in a sling.
Eaton QB Austin Fudge was extremely impressive. Showed much improved footwork in the pocket, which is important. A QB that doesn’t set his feet to throw is a QB that will tend to throw uneven, wobbly, inaccurate and weak throws.
Valley View’s defense played a strong game. They continually broke through Eaton’s offensive line, and continually made Fudge move in the pocket. That said, Fudge still managed to make plays. His ability to handle a pass rush was impressive.
There’s really no doubt about it. Fudge was the undeniable star on the field.
That said, I have not soured a bit on Pohl. Everything I wanted to see I saw. He’s still got a great arm. On one of those foolish rollouts, he ran to the right, behind some blockers, planted his feet and fired a rocket to a receiver running a post pattern. The wide out dropped the pass, but it was right on line and should’ve been a 30+ play.
I was not terribly impressed with the Spartan play calling. They ran a very foolish version of the Wildcat, and I presume the idea was to ‘trick’ Eaton’s defense.
To sum it up, Valley View played a decent game. But Eaton’s offense was explosive—Fudge showed a fairly decent deep ball. This is an impressive win for the Eagles.
A win they needed, too. This will dramatically assist their hopes of a playoff game.
Franklin defeats Brookville, 38-0
What do you want me to say? Brookville’s young, and not as talented as last year.
I didn’t expect 38-0, but it’s not surprising. Franklin’s a tough team with some light breaking through at the end of their tunnel.
Good win for the Wildcats.
Milton-Union defeats Northridge, 54-6
Expected, no?
Waynesville defeats Lemon-Monroe, 7-3
You know, I don’t want to toot my own horn here, but I’ve said before that maybe, just maybe, none of these teams are really that dominant.
Monroe should have won this game.
Yet, they didn’t.
Oakwood defeats Bellbrook, 17-14
Victory!
I knew it! Well, I kind of did. I knew who I wanted to win.
Congrats to Oakwood. The players, coaches and fans didn’t deserve 0-10.
(I won’t needle Eric over this. Or will I?)
