Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin wins Division II title with two-day score of 658
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin won its first state championship in girl’s golf as the second-annual Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II championships wrapped up Saturday at the Ohio State University Gray Course.
Chardon NDCL came from behind with a second-day team score of 326 to knock off defending champion Poland Seminary. Their two-day team score of 658 is the best in the two year history of the tournament, bettering last year’s two-day total by 21 strokes.
Poland Seminary took second place with a score of 687, while St. Paris Graham finished third, one place better than last year, with a team score of 687.
Medalist honors went to senior Alyssa Shimel of Pemberville Eastwood with a two-day total of 147. Shimel finished one-under par on her last eight holes and shot a 72 for the day giving her top honors.
Finishing close behind was sophomore Morgan Ransom of Gahanna Columbus Academy. Ransom matched exactly her performance from last year’s tournament, finishing second with a two-day total of 147.

Oakwood Wins Second Boys Division II State Golf Title
SUNBURY, Ohio – In its 25th state golf tournament appearance, Oakwood won its second boys state championship at the 2009 OHSAA Boys Division II State Tournament at Northstar Golf Resort in Sunbury. The first state title for Oakwood came in 1985.
Leading after day one, the Lumberjacks compiled a two-day team score of 623, seven strokes better than runner-up Alter. Coach Jen Hohmeyer’s Oakwood squad was led by senior Ronnie Stump, who fired a two-day score of 150, and junior Adam Bogdan, who carded a 151. Oakwood’s title ends the three-year Div. II state championship run by Hunting Valley University School, which finished third in 2009.
In his first state tournament appearance, Jackson senior Morgan Dobbins shot a 3-over 75 on Saturday to hold onto his spot atop the leader board to win the medalist race. The individual state qualifier shot a two-day total of 147 and becomes the first boy’s state golf champion in Jackson school history. Senior Tyler Hohman of Columbus St. Francis DeSales finished two strokes behind Dobbins to win the silver medal, while Jake Heinen of University School and Ronnie Stump of Oakwood tied for third place with a two-day score of 150.
Golfers battled cold and blustery conditions all weekend at the tournament’s first year at Northstar Golf Resort. Junior Alex King of Canal Fulton Northwest, however, was able to sink a hole-in-one Saturday when he needed only one stroke to finish the 190-yard hole 17.

Minster Wins First Boys Division III State Golf Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its fifth appearance at the OHSAA State Golf Tournament, Minster walked away with its first state title as the 40th-Annual Division II boys golf state tournament concluded Saturday at Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
Minster senior Ben Hogenkamp recorded a team-low score of 76 on the second day of competition to help lead the Wildcats to the title.
Strasburg-Franklin finished second in their first appearance at the state tournament with a team score of 671.
Junior Alex Andrews shot identical rounds of 73 to win medalist honors by seven strokes. His total score of 146 ties the OHSAA Division III state tournament record for lowest individual score on the Scarlet course.

2009 PREVIEW: The Ohio State University Gray Course will again be the host site for the 17th Annual OHSAA Girls Division I Golf Tournament.
West Chester Lakota West will make its seventh straight appearance at the state tournament after recording the lowest district score (322) among the 12 state qualifing schools. The Firebirds won the Southwest District title thanks in part to Kari Hogeback, who shot a team-low 74.
Defending champion Mason returns with three golfers from its state title team last year. Juniors Emily Wright, Erin Michel and Jessica Zhang all finished in the top ten for individual scores last year. Mason’s 2008 team score of 630 matched the Division I tournament record set by Dublin Coffman in 2000.
Medina Highland makes its first appearance at the state tournament, bringing a young team featuring two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior.
Lancaster Senior Samantha Swinehart qualifies for the state tournament for the fourth time in her high school career and will look to become the just the fourth two-time medalist winner in girls golf history.
Other teams rounding out the qualifiers are Ashland, Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame, Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy, Columbus Bishop Watterson, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, Massillon Jackson, Massillon Perry, Toledo St. Ursula Academy and Upper Arlington.
2008 RECAP: In just its second state tournament appearance, Mason built an insurmountable lead and never looked back, taking home its first Division I girls golf state title. The Comets’ 630 was 26 strokes better than runner-up Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit and tied Dublin Coffman’s 2000 squad for the lowest team score in Ohio girls state tournament history.
Three Mason golfers placed in the top 10 overall standings: sophomore Erin Michel (third with a 153), senior Alexis Nelson (seventh with a 158), and sophomore Emily Wright (10th with a 160).
Columbus Bishop Watterson shot a 656 and placed third after a tiebreaker with Walsh Jesuit.
After placing fourth a year ago as a sophomore, Lancaster junior Samantha Swinehart won medalist honors with a 145 two-day total. Swinehart was five strokes better than Pickerington North senior Courtney Yamamoto, who came in second. It marked the third consecutive year a golfer from Lancaster won medalist honors with Allie White winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.

2009 PREVIEW: The 84th Annual Division I Boys State Golf Tournament will take place this weekend at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course. The 2009 tournament field will look a little different this year as seven teams qualifying this year, did not do so in 2008.
Defending champion Cincinnati St. Xavier returns to the tournament this season after graduating all five members of its squad last year. The Bombers took first place in the Southwest District with a team score of 318.
Columbus St. Charles, making its seventh state tournament appearance, recorded the best district score among the 12 teams shooting 306, with four of its golfers shooting in the 70’s.
Junior Charlie Phillips of Mount Vernon earned the top district score (70) among the individual qualifiers, winning the Central/East/Southeast District by seven strokes.
Defending champion Korey Ward won the title last year as a sophomore and recorded a score of 71 on his way to winning this year’s Southwest District title.
Other teams rounding out the qualifiers are Centerville, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, Dublin Coffman, Dublin Jerome, Medina, Stow-Munroe Falls, Toledo St. Johns Jesuit, Uniontown Lake and Whitehouse Anthony Wayne.
2008 RECAP: Cincinnati St. Xavier climbed six teams and overcame an eight stroke deficit on the tournament’s final day to capture its third Division I boys golf state title and first since 1995. The Bombers’ other championship came in 1957.
St. Xavier was led by senior Sean Keating’s 158, which was good for third overall, and senior Matt Buse, who fired a 161. The Bombers’ 653 two-day total was two strokes better than defending champion Dublin Jerome, who sat atop the leaderboard with a two-shot lead after day one. Cleveland St. Ignatius also made a big jump in the standings to finish third with a 656 after placing eighth on the first day.
West Chester Lakota West sophomore Korey Ward broke a first-day three-way tie in the medalist race with a 77 on the final day and a 151 two-day total to place first. Aaron Siekmann finished two strokes behind Ward giving the Dublin Jerome senior his third consecutive second place finish. David Tepe, a senior from Liberty Twp. Lakota East, Sean Keating, and John Beringer, a senior from Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, all carded a 158 score tying the three for third place.
