CLAYTON – Jeremy Campbell blocked two first quarter punts to set the tone early for Northmont’s 44-14 win over the Fairborn Skyhawks on Friday night in the MVP Game of the Week.
And while the visitors managed to score two late touchdowns against the T-Bolt junior varsity, they were only able to muster 33 yards of total offense (9 yards rushing on 15 carries, and 24 yards on 2-for-10 passing and an interception) in the first half.
At intermission the score was Northmont 37, Fairborn 0.
The home team served notice to anybody who was willing to listen that they are still one of the three best teams in the region and that they they plan to stick around for a while.
Does anyone have any problems with that?
Northmont moves to 3-2 on the season (0-0 Greater Western Ohio Conference-Central).
“We had our real offense out on the field for the first time since the first quarter of the first game,” head T-Bolt coach, Lance Schneider said. “This is the first time that we have played with a full deck.
“I think that we really are clicking on all cylinders now.”
Northmont free safety, Xavior Johnson, intercepted a pass on the second play of the game to set up a 6-yard touchdown run by Paul Winkler.
Fairborn (3-2, 0-0 GWOC-South) went three-and-out.
After the Skyhawks’ punt, a Northmont march of 30 yards in seven plays ended with a 25-yard touchdown strike from Sakosky to Jordan Taylor.
Again, Fairborn went three-and-out.
Four plays later, Saksoky made it 21-0 after he found Brandon Reaman in the end zone from 32 yards out.
Fairborn went three-and-out again, only this time Northmont’s Jeremy Campbell blocked the punt. When the ball squibbed out of the end zone the score became 23-0 (at 11:16 of the second quarter).
The halftime score looked like a final.
Unofficially, Northmont generated 99 yards of total offense in the first half (57 yards rushing on 20 carries, and 142 yards on 8-for-14 passing). Korey Ringer, who had 49 yards rushing (12 carries) and 30 yards receiving (2 catches) in the first half.
The senior running back kept the chains moving when it really counted.
Therefore, let it be written, that Korey Ringer is the MVP Game of the Week’s, Player of the Game for Week 5.
Sakosky, who had been injured in the first quarter while playing against Cleveland St. Ignatius (week 2), sliced up his opposition on this night as if it were but level one of some badly misconceived video game.
“(Sakosky) has a gunslinger mentality,” Schneider said, laughing. “He really likes to zip it in there. He makes those hard to make throws—like the deep down and out cut—and that really allows us to spread the field in a way we haven’t been able to do in a while.”
And as efficient as the T-Bolt offense was on Friday night, it was their stingy defense that really raised some eyebrows. Consider the following:
1. Fairborn had one (1) first half first down.
2. Fairborn had 9 yards rushing (on 15 carries) in the first half.
3. Fairborn had 24 passing yards on 2-for10 passing with an interception in the first half.
Next week, Northmont meets Wayne (3-2, 0-0 GWOC-C) and Fairborn plays Sidney (2-3, 0-0 GWOC-N).
