Eaton-Brookville meeting headlines SWBL Southwest games this week
A look at this week’s Southwestern Buckeye League Southwest Division meetings…
Eaton at Brookville
I\’ve seen both teams, and both have flaws. But, this is the clear game of the week for me, and I’ll be in Brookville for the second time this year to see it.
As I like to do on my blog (address below), let me give you some bullet-point-style analysis of the Blue Devils first, and the Eagles second:
• Brookville has excellent skill and depth at the half-back position
• Brookville’s offensive and defensive lines are both young and mistake-prone
• Brookville’s secondary has big play potential but is still relatively unchallenged
• Brookville QB Jake Harrison has improved since Week 1 but is still not to be relied on consistently
• Brookville’s front seven is smart and can tackle in open-space
And now Eaton:
• QB Austin Fudge is an excellent passer with strong accuracy up to 25 yards downfield, and at least average control of anything to 40 yards
• RB Dalton Caudill has good vision and does not hesitate to hit the hole, and can make defenders miss
• Eaton’s offensive line tends to offer quality protection for Fudge and Caudill
• Eaton’s defense can be run on, due to their small defensive line, but they are quality tacklers in open-space
I’ll be honest with you – and quick, too. Eaton is more talented, basically across the board, and they are the better team. Brookville likely will have no answer for the Eagle passing attack, and I doubt the Devils can run the ball consistently on Eaton as St. Henry did. Give me Eaton.
Franklin at Milton-Union
The Bulldogs are a good team, and should win. Their running attack is quality, and I think they’ll have plenty of success against the Wildcats. It’s unlikely their Achilles heel – the passing game – will be exposed.
That said, Franklin has really impressed me since Week 1. But, I don’t think they can handle the Bulldogs. My logic tells me that, but in this year’s SWBL, anything can happen. Give me Milton, but this bad boy might be a toss-up.
Valley View at Oakwood
My prediction? PAIN. This happens Thursday night, and let me save you guys some travel and ticket costs: QB Kyle Pohl is going to go all Drew Brees on the Lumberjack defense. The road to 0-10 continues. Give me the View.
Bellbrook at Monroe
Those pesky Hornets took out the View last week, in what I’d call a shocker. Bellbrook is struggling, and they will lose again to an improving M team. Give me the Hornets.
The preview is a little short this week, due to some inter-SWD match-ups. But, let me rant here for a moment, okay?
Is anyone else wondering if the SWBL SW-D is full of mediocre teams? I thought highly of Eaton, but they were ransacked by St. Henry. Milton was beaten rather easily by Tipp, and the View lost to Monroe.
Obviously, all three teams have flaws. Obviously, not one of those teams could beat, say, Alter or Coldwater. But could any of those teams beat D-6 Marion Local or Delphos St. Johns?
I say no. And remember, for Eaton, that’s a three division gap.
That might be a token to the awesomeness of the MAC, but it could be a comment on the SWBL. This year, not one SW-D team can be considered a real threat to reach Round 3 of the playoffs.
